The problem with one's personal stock phrases is when you start using them all the time, instead of thinking up new descriptions. I shall have to start finding new ways to describe sunrises ;)
I'm surprised there's tension; where do you find it? The thing about silence is that it practically never is silent. There's always something going on quietly in the background [e.g. I'd consider it "quiet" where I am now, yet there's a boiling kettle rumbling away and buses hauling around outside. C'est la vie].
Being cold, wet and muddy, not to mention all other shades of uncomfortable, does tend to work to bring things into physical reality. Mostly because we're always grumbling about how uncomfy we are ourselves. It's a shame the characters didn't get much to do other than walk in single file for a few miles.
